After finally airing Gabby winning the All-Around gold medal, Bob Costas of NBC managed to stick his foot completely inside of his mouth — heel and all. Wrapping up a night of tedious commentary, he said that it is notable that Gabby is the first and so-far only black woman to win the title. And then:

“The barriers have long since been down but sometimes there [is] an imaginary barrier based on how one might see oneself.”

So there you have it, everybody! According to Costas, if you run into any barriers (you know, economic, social, educational, professional barriers…those barriers), don’t worry! They have nothing to do with race. And if they do, it’s only because of your weakness of mind. Just believe in yourself, and one day you may become an old white man too.
